Al-Qaeda vows to hit China over Uighur unrest

HONG KONG (AFP) — Al-Qaeda is threatening for the first time to attack Chinese interests overseas in retaliation for the deaths of Muslims in the restive region of Xinjiang, according to a risk analysis group.

The call for reprisals against China comes from the Algerian-based offshoot Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), according to a summary of its report sent to AFP by the international consultancy Stirling Assynt.

North Korea leader Kim has pancreatic cancer: report

SEOUL (Reuters) – North Korean leader Kim Jong-il has life-threatening pancreatic cancer, South Korean broadcaster YTN said on Monday, citing information gathered from Chinese and South Korean intelligence sources.

The report fueled speculation about Kim’s health while raising questions about the future of Asia’s only communist dynasty and who will make decisions about its nuclear programs.

Uighurs defy Urumqi mosque closure

Several mosques in the riot-hit Chinese city of Urumqi have opened for Friday prayers, countering earlier notices that all places of worship would be closed following clashes that left more than 150 people dead.

Mosques across the city, capital of China’s far western Xinjiang region, had been ordered to close amid fears that large gatherings of ethnic Uighur Muslims could spark renewed unrest and clashes with the city’s ethnic Han Chinese community.

Blood in the streets: Brutal rioting broke out this week in China’s Xinjiang region between members of the Uighur ethnic group, Han Chinese, and government security forces. More than 156 people were killed in the riots in the capital of Urumqi, which began after police quashed a protest by students over ethnic discrimination. China has threatened to execute the leaders of the uprising — while intervening to protect the Uighur community from ethnic reprisals. The violence has briefly focused global attention on one of the world’s bitterest, but least-understood, ethnic conflicts. Above, an unconscious protester is pulled away from the fighting on July 7.

North Korea May Be Behind Wave of Cyberattacks
